Lund Biomedicine ReproducibiliTea welcomed one of its largest turnouts ever at its latest journal club on February 4! This session featured AdvanSci co-founder Daniela Grassi, who presented “How to bolster employability through open science,” a recently published preprint by König et al. Daniela introduced some skills and tools that job-seeking candidates can implement to highlight their open science practices.

For example, scientists can build a research profile using the RESQUE (Research Quality Evaluation) framework, a platform that integrates open science metrics into one’s portfolio, beyond publications. By measuring and collating several indicators of research transparency and reproducibility—such as preregistration and data sharing—the application yields one’s Relative Rigor Score, which indicates the user’s comparative overall scientific rigor. Other means of calling attention to one’s open science practices include the use of Open Science Badges and open science statements for inclusion on a CV or cover letter.

The discussion turned to whether specific platforms and initiatives, like RESQUE, will have longevity, given the difficulty in widespread adoption of a voluntary, primarily self-driven endeavor. Participants, however, suggested that a more automated, perhaps AI-driven, method of creating scientific rigor scores would accelerate their use. Ultimately, it might not matter which platform achieves ubiquity: bringing visibility to one’s open science practices—in whatever form or metric—can only improve one’s employability.
